Lasting Effects
Many writers were influenced by the ideas presented during the Transcendentalist Movement. For example:
Art was also greatly influenced by the transcendentalist movement and continued to be for about twenty-five years after the movement. The paintings would idealize the individual, the beauty of nature, or a variety of other things. *Refer to Artists for more examples.
Revolutionary ideas were influenced by this movement and the viewpoint of the individual over group. The Civil War is an example of this. The South and the North did not agree on slavery and thus the South decided they would rather separate from the North than stay together.
Another influence was on abolitionists. Transcendentalists believed in rights for all men and women. Slavery went against that belief. Thus, many Transcendentalists believed that slavery was wrong and unjust.
Civil disobedience also developed from this movement. Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and others used civil disobedience as a non-violent protest for African Americans not having equal rights. Women's suffrage rights are yet another group influenced by this. Radicals from the 1950-1960s were influenced by this movement. They practiced anti-war, dissent, etc. They shared similar ideas about nature and spirit.
